Does marriage effect whether or not someone receives a Social Security Disability check?

2

My girlfriend and I are thinking about getting married. Nothing big, just want to go down to the courthouse and let the justice of the peace marry us and have a big ceremony a few years down the road.

One of the things that I am concerned about is if we were to get married, that she would lose her SSD check that she gets each month, as well as medicare and medicaid.

She has Multiple Sclerosis and has been awarded a monthly from Social Security Disability each month along with having Medicare and Medicaid. She does work, but it’s not enough to make much difference. She only works about 10 hours per week. It’s all she can work as she starts to get fatigued very easily. It’s a part of her illness.

I currently am a full time student. I am trying to get my EMT certification back again because I am unable to find work any other way. Trust me, I tried for over a year to find employment. So I go to school full time and will start my job hunt once I get my EMT certification again. Once I do that, more avenues will be open to me.

So right now we rely on what she makes until I have a job once again. we will probably still count on that check as to make it in the world today, two incomes are really needed. The only reason why were doing ok right now is because my mom helps us when she can.

So will she lose that check each month if we were to get married and I have a job or will she be able to keep it?

Trying to find out now because if she will lose it, then we will hold off till I am able to support the both of us in a few years.

If she is getting Social Security disability, the type based on her past earnings, your income and assets won’t affect it. (I am not sure if it would impact the insurance). If she is drawing SSI, the disability for people who have not earned enough credits for regular disability, your income and resources WILL be taken into account to determine whether she is still eligible for the program. If she is not sure which type she is getting, just check with the social security office.

I get SSI too. I don’t think it will change, but I would send a letter to the disability office, or whereever she gets her check and ask them.
