Can A 14 year old Female develop Multiple Sclerosis?
I’m 14 turning 15 in October, and from what I’ve read on wikipedia and other sites, I think I may have MS. Can someone please explain to me the symptoms, and the method of diagnosis if it is possible I have MS?
I have been having symptoms similar to MS for years, but recently, in the past year and a half, they have dramatically increased, and I HAVE had many tests to rule out minor things. They all came back saying I was fine, so that’s why I said MS. I’m going to ask my mother to take me to a doctor to get tests ASAP.
To the People who Asked symptoms. I have most of the mentioned symptoms except vision problems. I get lightheaded, muscle pain, tingling legs. I get numbness in my feet sometimes. Also, it seems to get worse if I do very physical things or get very stressed, is this consistent with MS?
Also it says on Wikipedia, I don’t know if it’s true, but it says that one of the symptoms of MS is bladder problems. When I was young I used to have to go to the toilet around five to ten times before i go to bed, because it always felt like I needed to go. And now that is returning, I have to go two to three times a night.
This must be scary for you and I hope you do find what is causing your symptoms and that it won’t be MS.
It is possible for a 14/15 year old to have MS and there seem to be more and more stories of very young people with MS, including toddlers.
Here is a site dedicated to Children with MS. http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/ms-1/multiple-sclerosis-children.htm
NASCAR driver Kelly Sutton was diagnosed with MS at 16. She’s a neat lady and does a lot to help out others with MS.

There are several types, or "forms" of MS, and MS affects each person differently.
Here are two very good MS sites…

Many diagnoses mimic or share symptoms with MS, and part of the diagnosing process is to rule in/out all possibilities. History is taken; lab work is done to check for other diagnoses (no blood test exist for MS); in-office exam including neurological evaluation is done; MRIs are usually done and might include the brain, brain stem, cervical spine, thoracic spine, lumbar spine… and these should be done both with contrast and without (a dye); spinal tap/lumbar puncture is another test which is best done during an attack as they can read falsely when not in attack and/or depending on where you are in going into our coming out of an attack; evoked potentials is another test used.
The site above, "ThJuland’s MSers’ Glen", should be able to describe each test and the process.
Good luck…
Very possible.
please see a doctor. it could be nothing.
Go to a DOCTOR not YA for your medical questions.
it is possible. there is a girl i went to school with who got it at 16!! she is supposedly the youngest person known to have it. i know she has seizures
My greatest sympathy is with you if you do have MS. You can get it from around 15 at the earliest.
And, for future reference, don’t use wikipedia.
Yes it is absolutely possible. GO TO A DOCTOR. The link I have included has the symptoms but you need to see a doctor to be sure. I will say a prayer for you.
MS presents with a variety of symptoms, including changes in sensation (hypoesthesia), muscle weakness, abnormal muscle spasms, or difficulty in moving; difficulties with coordination and balance (ataxia); problems in speech (dysarthria) or swallowing (dysphagia), visual problems (nystagmus, optic neuritis, or diplopia), fatigue and acute or chronic pain syndromes, and bladder and bowel difficulties. Cognitive impairment of varying degrees, or emotional symptomatology in the form of depression or pseudobulbar affect[3] are also common. Neuropathic pain is usual, and this can be in the form of Lhermitte’s sign. Neuropathic pain is the most common, distressing and intractable of the pain syndromes in MS.
It is doubtful that you have MS. There are many many other reasons for similar symptoms. Just go to your pediatrician and she can run a test and tell you what is making you feel bad.
It’s possible but very unlikely. Most likely is you have something minor and you’ve read some symptoms for a more serious disease on wikipedia and have panicked yourself into aligning your symptoms with those of the serious illness. For piece of mind you must go to a GP before you make yourself ill through worry.
I have never heard of someone that young being diagnosed with this disease at such a young age. Some of the first few symptoms is muscle weakness, tingling feeling in legs, feeling off balance, having trouble holding things in hands without dropping them, dizziness, nausea, double vision, blurred vision. My mother had it and she could never get the shower hot enough. There is not one certain test that says yes you have multiple sclerosis or no you don’t. There are several different tests that must be run and you must see a neurologist to be properly diagnosed. What symptoms are you having to lead you to believe you have this debilitating condition?
Yes it is possible, but rare. Here is the thing, when I was 15 I had every symptom of MS except bladder problems. I went to a Neurologist and he laughed me out of the office. Because I didn’t show any symptoms at the meeting, he said it was STRESS and part of being a teenager. He also thought I wanted attention. I felt terrible, I still continued to have symptoms and was sent to a psychiatrist. Doctors HATE it when patients self diagnose themselves, especially with terminal illnesses. Yes I have heard of kids as young as 2 diagnosed with MS. But it is more likely a vitamin B12 deficiency. Try eating healthier and try to reduce stress, see if that makes you feel any better. Ironically, for me, after high school, the symptoms disappeared. Either whatever it was went into remission or was stress like the doctor said, although he was a very rude d*ck about it. Hang in there sweetie.
